Fountain and calligraphy pens give the widest range of line and the most control, and are the only category where ink choice is part of the experience. Rollerballs deliver much of that wet, effortless line with no maintenance at all. Ballpoints are the reliable ones — the pens you lend without worrying. Mechanical pencils deserve a category of their own for anyone who sketches, drafts or wants to be able to change their mind.

Whatever you choose, check the refill format before you buy. A pen you cannot re-ink in five years is a pen you will stop using.

If you are buying for someone else, weight and grip diameter matter more than finish, and a medium point suits far more people than a fine one. If you are buying for yourself and cannot decide, start from the paper you actually use: cheap office paper punishes wet inks and broad nibs, while a good notebook makes them sing. And whichever category you land in, buy the refill or the ink at the same time as the pen — the most common way a good pen ends up in a drawer is running dry in the first month.
