Fountain Pen Ink Cartridges

Cartridges are the reason a fountain pen can live in a bag without ceremony. Drop one in, wait a few seconds for the feed to charge, and write. Nothing to fill, nothing to wipe, nothing to spill on a train.

The critical distinction is between standard international cartridges, which fit a large share of pens from many makers, and proprietary cartridges designed for one brand’s pens only. International cartridges come in short and long lengths — the long ones hold roughly twice the ink but need a full-size barrel. Always check what your pen takes before buying a box.

A practical habit: carry one spare cartridge in the pen barrel, blunt end first, behind the one in use. Most full-size pens have room, and it turns running dry from an inconvenience into a non-event. If you want colours beyond a brand’s cartridge range, a converter and bottled ink is the way out.

A few practical points. A new cartridge takes anything from a few seconds to a couple of minutes to charge the feed; standing the pen nib-down speeds this up considerably. Do not pierce a cartridge and then store it out of the pen — it will leak. And if a nearly full cartridge stops feeding, the likeliest cause is a partial vacuum rather than a blockage: loosen and re-seat the barrel, and it will usually clear at once.
